Hazards

Inland flooding, Storms and gales wind

The aim of this innovation project is to exploit recent laboratory research tests relating to debris accumulation patterns at the bridge piers, which results in increased forces on piers and affect flow patterns resulting in river bed scour. The project team will develop a decision-making tool to help asset owners identify the risk of such phenomenon.

Further Information

A new tool was developed to aid engineers to assess backwater effects (afflux) from the accumulation of debris. ‘Debris Afflux Calculator’ predicts the size of debris jams that can be formed at particular bridges and uses it to compute afflux.

A booklet has been produce to help engineers to assess the effects of debris accumulations at bridge piers on i) afflux, ii) structural loadings and iii) scour.
